To tie in with this year’s ‘Take a Break’ theme for Fairtrade Fortnight, Miss Jones, DT teacher and Head of Red House, organised an Emmanuel staff ‘ Bake Off’ challenge. To enter, all staff needed to do was bake any cake of their choosing using at least one Fairtrade product.
Miss Jones was overwhelmed by how many staff took up the challenge and on the day we had over 20 cakes on display in the staff room, although it’s fair to say that some were more creative and successful than others! An edible unicorn was even perched on top of one of the cakes, although Miss Jones wasn’t sure exactly how Fairtrade-related that was!
All of the entries were presented together in the staff room, whilst the identity of their bakers remained a closely-guarded secret. Throughout the week, staff members then bought slices of cake and voted for their favourite. Well over £100 was collected and all money raised will be split equally amongst the four House charities supported by Emmanuel: Nottingham City Hospital, Make a Wish Foundation, the Arches Project and Safer Families for Children.
Miss Jones commented “I would like to thank every member of staff who took part in this event, especially those who baked the cakes. Roll on Christmas when the next Bake Off challenge will be set. I might even try and encourage some parents to get involved next time around!”
