At Key Stage 4 we offer two pathways. The Applied Business and the Intermediate Certificate in Personal Finance are delivered together and are worth two GCSEs. Applied Business is a practical course aimed at students who are considering a career working in the business environment. Personal Finance gives students essential life skills that will help them become more financially literate in the future. In addition to these courses, we offer a BTEC First in Business which is designed to provide a specialist qualification aimed at providing knowledge, understanding and skills necessary to prepare students for employment and career development. Upon completing this course, each student will have developed their knowledge of the business sector and improved their employability skills through experience in teamwork, project management and flexible working. This qualification is equivalent to two GCSEs.
At Key Stage 5 we offer three courses. Economics provides students with the knowledge and insight necessary to understand the developments in the world economy with a particular focus on the causes and effects of the recent recession and the options open to the Government. In Applied Business, students gain a genuine grasp for setting up their own business, many of whom link this with the Young Enterprise scheme. In addition, they learn how to manage, motivate and lead people. In addition to these two A level subjects, we offer a one year BTEC Business National course which gives students the equivalent of one Business A level (at A2) plus a range of additional qualifications which help develop work related skills. These additional activities include qualifications in first aid and lifeguarding. This course is suitable for students who find they have to retake either/or maths and English at GCSE and can be either a one year stand alone course or a pathway through to A levels.
Enrichment Activities
To support the school enrichment programme, we offer the following activities: Young Enterprise which gives students the opportunity to set up their own business and enter a national competition. In addition, we offer coursework and exam support clinics; plus opportunities to visit businesses and listen to guest speakers from business. As part of the curriculum enrichment week, we offer a Dragons Den activity where students work across year groups producing, packaging, marketing and presenting their product in front of ‘real life’ dragons.
