Welcome to Mathematics

Mr R Taylor Director of Mathematics and Computing Learning Community rtaylor@emmanuel.nottingham.sch.uk

At Key Stage 3, students learn about the four strands of mathematics, Algebra, Number, Data Handling and Shape / Measures. The new Scheme of Work developed over the past 2 years offers a variety of methods of delivery of these strands utilising a wide range of resources. Lessons are vibrant and interesting with activities ranging from developing fruit cocktails, dealing with percentage, ratio and proportion, along with healthy living fat content and energy through to designing bedrooms, dealing with dimension, scales and pricing / budgeting. There are many more opportunities for pupils to investigate the use of mathematics in functional contexts.

At Key Stage 4 we offer GCSE mathematics where students will learn the ability to think abstractly, to analyse situations and to solve real-life problems. The course has been designed to meet the needs of the National Curriculum and to provide skills that will be useful in later life. The mathematics GCSE is changing in 2010 and there is to be a much greater emphasis on problem solving skills in mathematics. The course offered will be both linear and modular focusing on 3 key objectives; recall and use of mathematics, applying mathematics in a range of contexts and analysing problems and generating strategies to solve them. These objectives cover the 4 main areas in mathematics; Algebra, Geometry, Number and Statistics. Students on the modular course will take two modular exams in year 10 and a terminal paper at the end of year 11. Students on the linear course will take a terminal paper in Year 11.

At Key Stage 5, we offer the opportunity for students to study AS level modules in Mathematics and Further Mathematics in Year 12; and A2 level modules in Mathematics and Further Mathematics in Year 13. Students have a choice of which modules they study from Statistics, Mechanics and Decision mathematics in a combination with the usual Pure Core Mathematics involving calculus.

Enrichment Activities
To support the school enrichment programme, we offer the following activities: chess / strategy games club, which gives students the opportunity to stretch their mathematical and logical thinking skills; ICT / homework club allowing students without access to the internet at home to complete on-line homework and view other mathematical web sites; catch-up and exam support clinics; plus an open door policy for students with mathematical queries.
