Emmanuel Students are winners in National Design Challenge!

The Design and Technology Department encouraged Year 7 and 8 students to take part in the ‘National Spring Break Design Challenge’ over the Easter holiday. The challenge was to ‘design a product that will help people in one of the following contexts: home office, family living, (playful) family activities, boredom, home exercising, social distancing.’

The judging panel said there were hundreds of design entries and they were impressed with the talent. They said: “Innovation that improves the quality of people’s lives is essential and I am so excited for your future inventions as you will all get better the more you practice being creative.” All designs have been judged by a panel of designers and teachers, who found it a tough task, due to the outstanding creativity of the designs.

Grace (Year 8) came second for her amazing design idea called “Green Screen Connect” where she tackles the real issue we can all relate to: how to look professional on internet calls when working from home. Her concept is a T-shirt that is a green screen, so that different outfits can be projected onto it depending on who you are calling. What a brilliant idea! Grace has won a £50 Amazon voucher. Lydia (Year 7) also entered the competition and was a runner up.

Sian Sheldon, Lead Teacher of Design and Technology, said “ I am absolutely thrilled for Grace and Lydia, they have produced some really high quality innovative designs that meet a real design context. They have really demonstrated the talent that our students have here at Emmanuel.”
