Our Curriculum

Health & Social Care

Health and social care practitioners need to develop a knowledge base for working with people in every stage of their lives, and they need to know how their own experiences relate to health and wellbeing. Although it is generally accepted that there may be deterioration in health with age following adulthood, medical intervention means people are living longer and have better life prospects. This course will develop their knowledge and understanding of patterns of human growth and development. They will explore the key aspects of growth and development, and the experience of health and wellbeing. They will learn about factors that can influence human growth, development and human health. They will study the interaction between the physical and psychological factors of the ageing process, and how this affects confidence and self-esteem, which in turn may determine how individuals will view their remaining years. You will then explore the roles and responsibilities of people who work in the Health and social care sector. For example: Doctors, nurses, midwives, healthcare assistants, social workers, occupational therapists, youth workers, care assistants and support workers. The course covers a wide spectrum within the health and social care industry; Sociological perspectives and how these effect development, psychological perspectives and how these effect development, supporting individuals with additional needs, and how to support and care for  people with physiological disorders. Successful completion of this course will ensure that they are ready for completing A Levels or apprenticeships in this subject. It aims to encourage students to develop and demonstrate a deep appreciation of the skills, knowledge and understanding of scientific methods whilst developing competence and confidence in a variety of practical, mathematical and problem solving skills. Hope will be achieved through a curriculum that is designed to promote independence in every learner, enabling them to reach their full potential, whilst preparing them for their future higher education and careers choices. Student independence is achieved through flipped and interleaved learning, formative and summative assessments and self-extended learning.

Our curriculum represents the diversity of our students through the range of different case studies ensuring they are relevant and diverse to appeal and engage all pupils. The units explored ensure that pupils are demonstrating the four core values each lesson. They will apply wisdom to their knowledge of the case studies, along with having dignity in the work they are completing. They will apply hope and community to their work experience as they aim to secure a career in the health and social care industry within the wider Nottingham community.
