Remote Learning – Information for Parents

Archway Learning Trust and The Nottingham Emmanuel School are committed to providing high quality remote learning. Our intention is to:

  • Deliver transformational education to students whether they are physically in the building or accessing their educational entitlement from home.
  • Engage all students in great learning opportunities, which equip them with the necessary knowledge, skills and confidence to excel in their remote educational journey.
  • Equip all students with the tools required to actively develop a love of learning and develop strong literacy skills.​

The remote curriculum -What is taught to students at home?

Students will usually follow the same curriculum at home as they would do within the School building. They will be issued with instructions on how to follow their remote timetable and clear expectations on the learning that is expected during any periods of learning from home. In cases, where it is not possible to follow the exact timetable delivered within the School, students will be provided with a remote timetable.

What should my child expect to do if asked to work remotely from home?

Students (in most cases) will follow their normal timetable (which can be accessed on Go 4 Schools) and will, wherever possible, follow the same curriculum as if they were in the school.  Their learning will be made up of online lessons and voice recorded PowerPoints created by the teacher.  Microsoft quizzes will be used regularly to assess your child’s understanding of the content and provide them with feedback.

Remote teaching and study time each day – How long can I expect work set by the school to take my child each day?

We expect that remote education (including remote teaching and independent work) will take students broadly the same number of hours as if they were studying within the school.  We understand that access to technology may be an issue; so students may have a mixture of online learning and learning away from the computer.  It is also important that students continue to read both fiction and non-fiction texts and continue to develop the literacy strategies that they have been using in school.  Click here to link to the 6 Reading Strategies Images For Students and example KIM diagram for tackling new vocabulary.

Accessing remote education – How will my child access any online remote education you are providing?

Students will be provided with details on how to access all remote learning.  For students accessing online ‘live’ lessons, these will be delivered via Microsoft Teams and the student will log in with their School details which have been provided.

If my child does not have digital or online access at home, how will you support them to access remote education?

We recognise that some students may not have suitable online access at home.  We take the following approaches to support those students to access remote education:

  • Where possible the School will provide a loan of a laptop to access the online resources and or WiFi dongol.
  • In some cases, where this is not possible, the School will provide paper booklets and workbooks to ensure that students can continue with their education.

How will my child be taught remotely?

We use a combination of the following approaches to teach students remotely:

  • “Live” lessons which directly follow the students’ timetable.  These lessons are recorded and can be reviewed later in the class Team’s channel.
  • Pre-recorded lessons for students which are mainly PowerPoint based and involve voice recorded teacher instruction so that students can work at their own pace with clear modelling and explanation from the teacher.
  • Links to high quality external produced resources such as Hegarty Maths, Educake and Bedrock that we routinely use within the Trust to support learning. 
  • We may provide links to external resources such as Oak National School which the government have resourced to support online learning (Home – Oak National School (thenational.school))
  • High quality booklets and materials that can be used without the need for technology.

Engagement and feedback

What are your expectations for my child’s engagement and the support that we as parents and carers should provide at home?

We expect the same high level of engagement from your child for remote learning as we do in the School.  The teachers will follow the same behaviour policy praising students and rewarding excellent work during online lessons using positive House points.

How will you check whether my child is engaging with their work and how will I be informed if there are concerns?

Our online learning platform allows teachers to keep track of attendance, engagement and completion of work.  We feel that is important that students are rewarded for their efforts during these periods of learning online at home and the majority of our students will receive positive house points.  Parents may be contacted by text, email or telephone call from class teachers or the Year Leader if there are concerns about a child’s engagement or if they require additional support.

How will you assess my child’s work and progress?

Our approach to assessing work remotely is very similar to that within the classroom. We believe it essential that students receive timely and high quality feedback.  Feedback can take many forms and may not always mean extensive written comments for individual students.  For example, whole-class feedback or quizzes marked automatically via digital platforms are also valid and effective methods, amongst many others.  We have built into our curriculum, low stakes testing to ensure that students are aware of any misconceptions and how they can make improvements to their work.  You will predominantly see this in the spaced retrieval activity at the start of the lesson, which students should complete to the best of the ability from memory before self-marking.

Additional support for students with particular needs

How will you work with me to help my child who needs additional support from adults at home to access remote education?

We recognise that some students, for example some students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), may not be able to access remote education without support from adults at home. We acknowledge the difficulties this may place on families, and we will work with parents and carers to support those students in the following ways:

  • In some cases a teaching assistant will assist the student remotely in online ‘live’ lessons
  • Work will always provided at a suitable level for a student’s ability and where necessary the student will be provided with additional help such as scaffolds and models to help complete the work.

Remote education for self-isolating students

Where individual students need to self-isolate but the majority of their peer group remains in school, the format of the remote education provided will differ from the approach for whole groups. The resources for each lesson will be uploaded to Teams so that students can access all of the learning.

If my child is not in school because they are self-isolating, how will their remote education differ from the approaches described above?

This will depend upon the number of students isolating and the resources available within the School. Where possible the student will follow their usual timetable but when this is deemed not to be possible, the student will be issued with an alternative timetable and provision.  Students will access their lesson resources directly from their class Team and teachers will give feedback on their progress and learning.
